SOSA wipes out Sockers Youth Branch

March 12th, 2004

The Southeast Ontario Soccer Association has passed a rule requiring competitive youth Clubs to now field recreational teams.  For small Clubs like Sockers Youth this is a death sentence.  Sockers Youth opposed this rule, but the SOSA board decided to pass the rule anyway.  So after 8 years of developing young talent, 16 youth titles, 5 players landing US scholarships, 3 players advancing to the Canadian Professional Soccer League, and a top ten Ontario ranked team, the SOSA Board has eliminated the Club.  We have been told to affiliate with neighbouring Clubs, but this really means assimilate.  Sockers youth players are expected to sign with BYSC Comets, and we thank the Comets for accommodating the players, coaches, and managers. Youth Club Founder Mike Whitehead would like to recognise everyone involved with the Sockers Youth Club over the years, and specifically the coaches and managers, who worked so hard.  Whitehead adds "My brother Steve and I ran the youth Club for years, and we worked so hard at it.  We ran a first class organization and we're very proud of our accomplishments !  We had the best little Club in Eastern Ontario, and we want people to know the truth about what's been done to us." The good news is that Sockers Senior Club is expanding, and will celebrate 20 seasons in 2005.
